Characteristics of a mediated conversation
A mediated conversation permits parties in conflict to engage and obtain the information they need for their decisions about how to resolve their dispute. The mediator’s job is to set the context, create a ‘container’ for conversation, and as needed guide the conversation to productive ends. As such, a healthy mediated conversation:
- Are thoughtfully facilitated by the mediator.
- Jointly and directly engage the participants.
- Increase understanding of the conflict, risks, interests and options for resolution.
- Are open, healthy and appropriately respectful.
- Enlarge, rather than diminish, the participants.
In this context, the mediator builds the participants capacity to engage, and creates the environment for the necessary conversation (rather than assuming the mediator will resolve the dispute).
